NICKLAS

Copenhagen

Study program:

I study a Master's degree in Mathematical Modelling & Computation at the Technical University of Denmark.

My FinTech idea:

I want to fight money laundering on the blockchain using machine learning.

My greatest inspiration for the FinTech idea:

High-profile cases of money laundering in traditional banking. It's already a big issue and cryptocurrencies certainly complicate things further.

I applied for the scholarship because:

I want to further develop myself through academically challenging studies at UC Berkeley, compliment my technical background with business perspective and to learn more about entrepreneurship in general. The financial sector is very welcoming to tech and innovation in general so it's an excellent opportunity to do tech entrepreneurship - and there's no better place to do that than in Silicon Valley.

What I look forward to:

I look forward to get inspired by internationally recognized professors, experience the Silicon Valley startup scene and to learn more about FinTech, business and innovation through the Entrepreneurship Track.

FREDERIK

Aalborg

Study program:

Computer Science Aalborg Universitet

FinTech idea:

Performing stock market prediction using the latest advancements in natural language processing and computer vision.

My greatest inspiration for the FinTech idea:

Stock prices are a product of the belief of stock brokers in a company, and therefore, you need to understand their thoughts to perform better predictions. However, the collective belief is not so easily captured, and as a result, stock market prediction is a complicated and interesting challenge.

I applied for the scholarship because:

Berkeley is a world-class university that resides in a vibrant culture with an entrepreneurial mentality. I hope that I can learn from some of the very best professors about the newest technologies, and through the SPARK entrepreneurship program, I hope to develop my Fintech idea into a business using these technologies.

What I look forward to:

I look forward to the environment of Silicon Valley, experiencing lectures and the culture at the renowned UC Berkeley, and joining my fellow students at various meetups. I'm also looking forward to learning seeing the Bay Area and having a great time!

PETER

Copenhagen

Study program:

I'm currently studying Mathematical Modelling and Computation at The Technical University of Denmark, specializing deeply within the field of Deep Learning and it's applications.

FinTech idea:

I wish to leverage the latest developments in Artificial Intelligence, especially computer vision, to assist people in selling property without the use of a broker.

My greatest inspiration for the FinTech idea:

One day one of my friends listed a room on facebook, however the price just didn't seem right. So I through that in order to evaluate the value of the room I would need more information. But after being disappointed with the current available tools online, I decided to build a better app for estimating property value before you list on your own.

I applied for the scholarship because:

It allows you to connect with people from UC Berkeley, which has some of the greatest minds doing Deep Learning on the planet! This both stems from their top position in Computer Science worldwide, but also due to their strong entrepreneurial connections with the Silicon Valley Ecosystem, which you can take part in due to the scholarship.

What I look forward to:

Enjoying my time with the fellow receivers of the Fintech Scholarship both as a student but also a room mate. And also experiencing as much as possible of everything this incredible environment has to offer: From the scenery, the professors, the entrepreneurial track, going into the stacks to survive hell week,  to getting food delivered from the Kiwibot.

JULIANA

Copenhagen

Study program:

Master in Finance and Strategic Management (Cand.merc) at CBS

FinTech idea:

Verification and enablement of in-time payments for very young start ups with liquidity and working capital problems

My greatest inspiration for the FinTech idea:

There is a huge struggle for people who want to launch their own business, as it is very risky for founder and their customers. Fintech can improve solutions for working capital flows, in time payments and trust between a young company and its customers

I applied for the scholarship because:

Smart innovation in fintech can improve lots of problems and create better chances everywhere. I have a real passion for fintech and want to drive my career in this field - it's the future of financial services, which are the very basis for every business and part of everyone's life.

What I look forward to:

The environment of Silicon Valley and UC Berkeley will be truly inspiring and I am looking forward to meet exciting people and ideas. I am pretty sure this scholarship can be life changing

FREDERIK

Copenhagen

Study program:

MSc Finance & Strategic Management, Copenhagen Business School.

FinTech idea:

Allowing private investors to invest sustainably while building a diversified portfolio.

My greatest inspiration for the FinTech idea:

My biggest inspiration for my Fintech Idea has been the growing importance of sustainability in our society. In this sense, it is naturally also important to consider where we put our money and which kind of growth opportunities we fuel through our private investments.

I applied for the scholarship because:

To gain experience within an entrepreneurial setting which hopefully would allow for taking a different approach to solving problems and doing business than the more conventional approach taught at most courses in business school. I see the entrepreneurial track and the academic track as great complementarities which really extends the overall learning outcome.

What I look forward to:

I am mostly looking forward to the entrepreneurial track that will take place in the very inspiring setting of Silicon Valley, which hopefully would provide valuable insights and a dynamic approach to solving problems. Furthermore, I look forward to live in Berkeley and have a full-on American college experience combined with a strong academic agenda.

ANNA

Copenhagen

Study program:

MSc of Law at the University of Copenhagen.

My fintech idea:

Small fintech or start-up companies rarely have the budget to hire a legal advisor to guide them through the legislative jungle and find the relevant legal regulations, get an overview or help them make a long-term legal strategy. Yet, understanding legal regulations within their area of business is essential for establishing a company that will thrive in the long run.

My fintech idea solves this problem, it gives you all the legal knowledge needed, gathered one place, from a reliable legal source. My fintech idea will change the way start-ups navigate legal matters by creating a platform that collects the necessary legal knowledge, documents and processes, do’s and don’ts, along with an overview of special legislation concerning the areas of e.g. IP and fintech.

My greatest inspiration for the fintech idea:

I chose to study law because I find that understanding the law and how it affects companies, society and the people herein, is an essential tool which can enable innovators and their companies to reach their full potential. I found the inspiration for my fintech idea in the startup environment, talking to people I knew from school, work or volunteering who came to me with their startup ideas and asked me about very basic legal advice even though I had only just started studying law. There are so many great ideas out there that can be made into fintech and startup companies, and all they need is basic legal advice and available materials to understand and navigate the jungle of relevant legislation.

I applied for the scholarship because:

I want to provide people with the legal knowledge to change their lives and I can do this by making legislation easily accessible and understandable such as through the platform for startups that I am currently working on. The opportunity to study at the University of California Berkeley will provide me with the necessary entrepreneurship and technical knowledge, and further develop my legal skills and insights regarding fintech regulation. This will enable me to create this platform that helps startups understand legislation, so they can act in the most efficient way, developing their ideas with a solid legal foundation and create a sustainable business.

What I look forward to:

I look forward to the academic challenges I will meet at the University of California Berkeley, and the unique opportunity to learn from and with inspiring students and insightful professors. I cannot wait to have the opportunity to engage in academic discussions and exchange knowledge with experts within their field, putting my theoretical knowledge into practical use at Berkeley working with people from Silicon Valley the world’s leading hub and startup ecosystem for high-tech innovation.
